Frequently Asked Questions
Shared Hosting is an entry-level web hosting product that is both the most popular and the least expensive, often attractive for small and medium businesses, blogs, portfolios and websites with moderate amounts of traffic. With Shared Hosting, multiple websites share a large server and its resources, including storage, bandwidth and disk space. With Shared Hosting, the web host is responsible for all of the server maintenance and upkeep. All of Skylite Hosting’s Business Hosting plans are Shared Hosting plans.
If you are new to web hosting or are creating a site with low to moderate amounts of traffic, Shared Hosting is likely the best option for you. It is the most affordable web hosting you can buy and will likely have more than enough resources for your site(s) to run quickly and efficiently. As your site grows and you experience increases in traffic and usage, it may be time to move up to Virtual Private Server Hosting, where you are given your own partition of a dedicated server. Finally, if you have a resource-intensive application or a site with a very high amount of traffic, you have the option of upgrading to your own Dedicated Server, which provides you with all of the server’s resources and allows you to configure it any way you see fit.
Skylite Hosting makes it easy for new web developers to get their sites up and off the ground. All of our Business Hosting plans come with Softaculous, an application installer that will allow you to download over 400 applications to help you with your website. These applications include, but are not limited to, Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal, Online Marketplaces such as Prestashop, Magento and OpenCart, and many others. Shared Hosting is a perfect environment to develop and hone your programming skills and provides a number of tools for novices.
Yes. Skylite Hosting offers free website transfers to make sure your site is moved to our servers without any downtime and without losing any of your important data. This applies to website transfers that consist of 3 or fewer cPanel accounts, databases and/or websites. If you have more than 3 accounts, websites or databases, we can still transfer your site over for $10/item transferred. You can also transfer your website yourself, and if you need help we have an extensive Support Center to help walk you through the process.
The number of websites you can host with one account depends on the Business Hosting plan you select. For Launch plans, you will be allotted 2 websites for your account. For Power plans, you can have up to 6 websites. With our Pro plan, you can host an unlimited number of websites. No hidden fees or surprise charges, just multiple websites for one low price.
You are ready to start building your website(s). Once you have purchased your Shared Hosting package, log into AMP and explore options such as registering and transferring domains, accessing cPanel, purchasing SSL certificates, setting up your email, submitting website transfer requests and much more. You can also log in to cPanel and begin installing applications such as WordPress. We have a number of education channels relating to getting your account set up. If you run into problems, don’t hesitate to reach out to our helpful support staff for help. Skylite offers two levels of support for all dedicated hosting plans: core-managed and cPanel relevant support. All dedicated servers come with core-managed support, and if you have chosen to purchase cPanel through us, we offer additional support options relevant to cPanel.
We use a proprietary provisioning system which ensures that your dedicated server hosting is ready instantly. Yes, you read that right – your server is available for use immediately. No 24 hour wait, no setup fees.
Our dedicated server hosting uses the SuperMicro blade chassis, which has a small footprint with reduced power consumption and cooling requirements. These efficiencies allow us to pass cost savings down to you so your costs are kept to a minimum. Our servers are powered by Intel Xeon HyperThreaded processors, DDR3 RAM and 7200RPM SATA drives.
With our custom in-house shared storage device, you can add a near infinite amount of storage to your dedicated server hosting package. While your server has 1TB of local storage, you can choose to expand this by adding space instantly to your server on our shared storage device. This will be instantly attached to your dedicated server as a disk, at which point you can format it and mount it. You can choose to buy anywhere from 50GB to 500GB of storage at a time.
There are several ways to access your hosting server: (1) SSH – you can access your dedicated server through any SSH client using the root credentials we provide you (2) cPanel – if you have chosen to purchase cPanel from us, you can access and manage your server through the cPanel/WHM control panel (3) dedicated server control panel – you can also perform frequent operations, such as stopping, starting and restarting your server through our web-based control panel, which comes bundled with every dedicated server hosting order
Yes, we offer WHMCS as a billing panel for your dedicated server. You can purchase the license from us for a significantly lower cost, and then install it on your dedicated server.
We manage both the hardware of your server and the pre-installed LAMP stack with cPanel/WHM. Any updates or security patches are installed and maintained by us as well as having a maximum 2 hour hardware replacement guarantee.
Generally, a standard setup is 24 hours and a custom setup is 24-48 hours. In the event of an emergency (Major hacking attempt, DDOS, etc.), it could take longer.
Can I upgrade my Skylite Shared Hosting, Reseller Hosting or VPS Hosting account to a Dedicated Server?
Yes! You are able to upgrade your current account to a Dedicated Server at any time. We would apply any amount left on your current contract to the cost of the upgrade and we will move everything for you for free from your current account to the new server. Keep in mind since you would be moving from one server to another, a small amount of downtime can occur during the process. We will work with you to make it as painless as possible.
We do offer hardware customizations on existing Dedicated servers but it is recommended you add them on at the initial purchase as any hardware changes once the server is active would result in downtime for your server. The cost varies depending on the upgrades. Contact our Sales team for prices.
Skylite Hosting gives an generous amount of free dedicated IPs, but if you find yourself looking for more, please contact our Sales team. We charge $4/mo charged upfront for the year at $48 per IP address.
All of our servers come pre-installed with a full license of cPanel with WHM. In order to see all options within WHM you would need to request Root Access through AMP once the account is setup.
When there is a hardware failure, who is responsible for the server hardware and how long will it take to fix?
We are 100% responsible for the hardware of your dedicated server in case of any hardware failure, we also have a maximum 2-hour hardware replacement guarantee from the time of detection.
Most of our competitors post a 100% uptime. We want to be honest with our customers by not rounding up to 100%. Our current uptime is 99.999%. We do this by making sure we have redundancies in the network and systems in place to prevent network errors.
We provide a 30 day FULL money back guarantee. No catch! Unlike our competitors, if you prepaid for the year, we prorate what you used and return the rest. We want to give you the best experience, no matter if you’re coming to or leaving InMotion Hosting.
Virtual Private Server Hosting or VPS Hosting is essentially a dedicated server within a shared hosting environment. With VPS Hosting, each customer can run their own virtualized operating system within a partition of a dedicated server. Even though multiple customers are on the same physical machine, VPS Hosting allows each customer’s account/website to have all the capabilities of being on their own separate machine. This type of hosting offers advanced performance and flexibility with the ability to customize at an affordable price.
While Dedicated Server Hosting offers isolated hardware, where resources such as disk input/output and host network connections are not shared, it also requires a significant upfront investment and a higher level of technical capability to manage it. With VPS Hosting, you share a server with other customers, but remain isolated from those other users on the server. With Virtual Private Server Hosting you are granted your own section of a partitioned dedicated server with a guaranteed threshold of dedicated RAM, storage and bandwidth and have the ability to customize this partition, much like a dedicated server. VPS Hosting provides a more cost-effective and scalable option for growing businesses when compared to Dedicated Server Hosting. On the other hand, with Shared Hosting you share a portion of the server with other users, potentially affecting your output if other users on the same server are experiencing high traffic.
Skylite Hosting’s Virtual Private Servers now combine the power and performance of our classic VPS Hosting plans with perpetual availability of the cloud. Our new and improved infrastructure is setup with a network of clusters in a virtualized environment, each of which contain a number of different highly available servers. These clusters all contain redundant hardware, so if your node fails for any reason, all of your data and files will be safeguarded, and your partition will spin up instantaneously on a different node. Essentially, you receive cloud-like real-time redundancy for your partition.
As the stepping stone between Shared Hosting and a Dedicated Server, VPS Hosting provides a powerful, reliable and scalable hosting option for a myriad of different uses and applications. Whether you have a growing business, are looking to set up an online store, building a portfolio or wanting to set up unique applications, VPS Hosting is capable of supporting a number of different situations and configurations. Although multiple VPS accounts are hosted on one physical server, we can run several different virtualized operating systems on that one server. Each of these operating systems will perform as if it was on its own dedicated server, giving you all of the benefits at a fraction of the cost. Skylite Hosting uses Parallels Virtuozzo Container to virtualize the operating system.
Skylite Hosting’s Virtual Private Server Hosting comes with a number of additional features including high-availability , snapshots, resource monitoring, free solid-state drives (SSDs), a free full cPanel license, 1 free dedicated IP address, WHM, CentOS, burstable RAM, automated data backups, unlimited MySQL databses, email accounts and FTP accounts, root access and SSH access.
No. Unlike Shared Hosting, where all accounts share the same available resources with all the other accounts on the server, VPS hosting gives you your own dedicated CPU, memory and disk space. Your site will not be affected by other users on the same server.
